Los Angeles which is often called the City of Angels was found in the year 1781. It is one of the world’s best centers for technology, trade and culture. Los Angeles has been serving as the booster for United States’ economy. The city has a maverick shape and the total area covered by the city is nearly 500 square miles, extending 29 miles in latitudinal and 44 miles in longitudinal direction and a mountain range also bisects it. Sister Elsie Peak is the highest point in Los Angeles, which is officially called Mount Lukens. The river of Los Angeles is a seasonal river which begins from the Canoga Park, flows through Vernon and then joins with the Pacific Ocean. This is a short review of Los Angeles. I checked out most of the places when I was there :-). My next stop was Las Vegas for which I also wrote a short guide and review.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is the epicenter for the earthquakes in Los Angeles. There are nearly 10000 earthquakes occurring every year and is due to the fault lines over and under the ground. Few of these earthquakes are of low intensity and aren’t felt generally. The most accountable earth quake is the Chino Hills earthquake which occurred on July 29th 2008 and the Northridge earthquake in the year 1994. Tsunamis from the Pacific Ocean also occur and have damaged the harbor areas. Los Angeles is as subjected to the blind thrust earthquake near the metropolitan area and was discovered through the Global Positioning System observation in the NASA research study and have cited that this was due to the recharging and pumping of groundwater.
Located along the longitudes of the Mediterranean Sea, Los Angeles has a hot and dry summer and contrastingly cool and wet winter seasons, majority being summer days. The rainfall is also highly contrasting, from mild rains to thunderstorms in the city and the beaches. The snow is quite rare in this city due to its climatic conditions. The city also suffers from smog due to the automobiles, airplanes, and industry abundance. This leads to acid rain in the city most of the time. The State of California has issued the Clean Air Act to control the air pollution and global warming. The city is the collection of neighboring towns of Downtown, Eastside, South LA, the Harbor Area, Hollywood, Wilshire, Westside, San Fernando and the Crescenta Valleys.
This city of Angels has lot of spots for the tourists to stop and watch. They are the Walt Disney, Hollywood, China town, Griffith observatory, County Museum, Watts Towers, Capitol Records tower and many more. The demographic census has recorded over 3.7 million people residing in the city with a population density around 7877 people per square mile. The city has been inhabited by the Latin and Asian immigrants also in the recent decade. Generally, the people of Los Angeles are called Angelenos. It has been considered as the home for more than 140 countries with people speaking more than 220 different languages. The archdiocese of the country is lead by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of the city. There are many catholic churches all over the city. The second largest temple of the Jesus Christ, the Los Angeles California Temple is situated in the Westwood district of Los Angeles. It has the third largest Jews population in United States and is mainly residing in the West Los Angeles. As said earlier, the city has multi-ethnic population and practices Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and other eastern ethnics.
The Hollywood which is the most visited hot spot in the city is the home to various clubs often visited by the celebrities; it has a huge shopping complex inside with restaurants and pubs situated among them. It has a museum of who several Hollywood pictures such as the King Kong, Jurassic Park have been shot with low cost and high technology. The major highlight of this place is the live demonstration of the car crash, floods, rains, ocean etc. These are mainly the miniatures of the set and are made to look as the real scenario in the movies. The Hollywood has the Highland center and the Kodak theatre situated inside its campus.
Another place of sight is the Los Angeles is along the beach-cities; the city has more than 50 miles of coastline with nearly 33 beaches and is the major attraction for shopping and dining activities. In these beach-cities, we are provided with all sorts of cuisines taken care of by the Mexican chefs. Most of the Hollywood celebrities - Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston visit these beach-cities for shopping.
The city has rich soil due to the beaches and mountains. The plants that grow natively in the city are the toyon, oak, poppy and the rye grass. As cited earlier, this city has been the economic booster for the continent of USA, which is mostly driven by the international trade and tourism, petroleum, technology, medicine and fashion. It is regarded as the largest manufacturing unit in the continent. The trading business mainly is done through the Pacific Rim. It is regarded as the chamber of commerce. The largest private sector of the city is the University of Southern California which is a research university with nearly 17 thousand graduate students enrolling each year and is regarded as the College of the Year 2000. Other private sector companies in the city are the 20th Century Fox, which is one of the major American film studios, Latham & Watkins – the global law firm exceeding 2100 attorneys in US, Europe and Asia, Ernst & Young which is the largest professional firms in the world and is regarded as the 7th largest private company in the United States, Paul Hastings, yet another international law firm in Los Angeles with 1200 attorneys worldwide and the Paramount pictures Corporation which is involved in motion picture production and distribution for the Hollywood. Other major companies in the county are the City National Bank, Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures Entertainment which is the parent of the Columbia Pictures, and DreamWorks which has produced successful movies like the Shrek Series. The shopping hot spots in the city are the Hollywood and Highland complex, Robertson Boulevard and the Westside Pavilion.

Echo Park in Los Angeles
Most important and day to day news about Los Angeles is brought out by the Los Angeles Times, which is a Spanish newspaper. Other local newspapers are the Investor’s Business Daily, Daily News, LA Weekly, LA Business Journal etc. There are also Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Korean, Armenian and Russian language papers distributed in the city. The other media which is very prevalent in the city is the television which has about 7 very high frequency (VHF) allocations for them. The first television station of the city was the KTLA which was originated in the city in the year 1947. The KABC-TV 7, KCBS 2, KNBC 4, KTTV 11, and KPXN 30 etc are the significant affiliated television stations in the city. There is also Spanish television networks spread across the city.
Any place is marked by the sports it is famous for. Los Angeles is most famous for the games like Baseball, Hockey, Basket ball, Foot ball etc. It houses several sports associations and agencies like the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball, Los Angeles Lakers of National Basketball Association, and Los Angeles Avengers of Arena Football League. The University of California Los Angeles, UCLA, and the University of Southern California also have their home teams playing for the Los Angeles city. It was the host for the worldwide summer Olympic Games in the years 1932 and 1984. Los Angeles has a lot of sport venues, gymnasiums and entertainment centers for the players to practice for their tournaments.
Regarding the political view of the city, it is said to be governed by the mayor-council system. There are nearly 15 city council district under this. Other offices of posts given in the government are the City attorney and the City controller. It also has a police agency for the city named the Los Angeles Police Department, with sub departments – office of public safety that takes care of the public places of the city like parks, libraries and the zoo, the port police which is responsible for the harbor of Los Angeles, the LA city schools police department and the airport police. The government has also launched the Mayors against Illegal Guns Coalition, drug treatment center for treating the drug addicts and non-teetotalers. This city has thus been regarded as the Gang Capital of the country.
Public transportation is very handy in the city, as the city’s metropolitan transportation authority operates a broad spectrum of bus lines, subways and rail lines in the county. This city’s subway is regarded as the ninth busiest and the railway is regarded as the third busiest in USA. Transportation by air is also facilitated by the Los Angeles International Airport which is rated as the fifth busiest commercial airport of the world. The Port of Los Angeles in south of downtown occupies nearly 7500 acres of land is called the Los Angeles Harbor. Owing to the wonderful contours, demography, technology, trade and media, this city has been well regarded as the city of angels!
